Congratulations to the 2021 Gayle Lyman Memorial Scholarship Recipients

Former Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (CSSGA) Board President, Gayle Lyman, passed away unexpectedly in 2015. Gayle raised his family and spent his career in the construction industry in Grand Junction, Colorado. Throughout his life, he was dedicated to supporting students pursuing degrees in or applicable to the aggregate, construction management, and mining industries. After his passing, the CSSGA board members dedicated the association’s annual scholarship in his honor. This month, the CSSGA board of directors awarded the Gayle Lyman Memorial Scholarship to two deserving students: Jason Jacoby and Erin Kunkel.

Jason is a rising sophomore at the Colorado School of Mines and is majoring in Mining Engineering. Jason was inspired by his father’s work in the aggregates industry and hopes to model his career in a similar fashion. This summer, Jason plan to intern at a local quarry. Upon completing his degree, he plans to work in industry, work his way up the ladder, and hopefully one day work overseas.

Erin is an environmental manager with Martin Marietta and is pursuing her Master of Business Administration (MBA) specializing in Managing for Sustainability at the University of Colorado Denver. She obtained an undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. Her goal in the MBA program is to improve and build on her overall business knowledge and proficiency in the aggregate mining and construction materials industry. Erin will use the MBA program to navigate business decisions when permitting new locations, grow existing relationships at current facilities, and reclaim sites.
